If you want a self-propelled petrol lawn mower but you’re on a tight budget then it’s difficult to decide which option to get. Although it adds to the cost of lawn mowers, self-propulsion is a benefit that can’t be overstated.

Not having to push the mower yourself saves you energy and more importantly time; Even if you reach a difficult patch of grass, the mower will just power itself over and make short work of your garden whether it is a small narrow strip where you hold BBQs in the summer or an expansive square where your kids play football.

It’s no wonder that this is such a busy market segment!

Since we are looking at the lower end of lawn mowers in this category, it’s impossible to get every feature so you have to make sure to pick and choose which options are important to you.

Different mowers have different strengths and weaknesses so even if you don’t splash the cash, that doesn’t mean that you can’t get a lawn mower that is good for your situation.

The Mountfield 464 T4-B is a 44cm mower which is designed for medium-sized gardens, it is also one of the more popular budget self-driven petrol lawn mowers available and in this review we will take a look why that’s the case.

Key Features:

  • 125cc Briggs & Stratton 300 Series OHV 4-stroke engine
  • 44cm cutting width
  • Folding handles
  • 5 stage cutting height from 20-70mm
  • 55L grass collector volume
  • Weight: 23kg
  • 5-year warranty

Large Grass Collector

The Mountfield 464 TR-B is equipped with a generous 55L grass box despite its diminutive size. This box is made out a durable weatherproof plastic that safely retains all the clippings safely in any weather (although we wouldn’t suggest that you try to cut wet grass if you can help it).

The box has an integrated handle in a convenient position at the top which allows you to easily transport the box for emptying after use. Speaking of emptying, the grass box has a large hinged lid which opens to allow you to evacuate the clippings.

The benefit of this design is that grass is contained securely and far less likely to get trapped inside the collector than in models with smaller openings.

Folding handle

The handle on the lawn mower might not as adjustable as others on the market (the height cannot be changed for example) but it’s fully foldable for easy storage which is a convenient touch that can sometimes be forgotten on similar models.

When combined with the small body of the mower, this allows for really compact storage and ensures that you to have the best possible likelihood of fitting the lawn mower into small sheds or garages, clearing up clutter and giving you even more space for trimmers, tools or soil test kits.

Briggs and Stratton 300 E

A compact and efficient Briggs and Stratton 300 series OHV 4-stroke engine is equipped on the 464 TR-B. This 125cc engine is reliable and incredibly low maintenance, never requiring any oil changes after purchase although, as with any petrol engine, the oil level will still need to be monitored and topped up as required. Ait filters will also need to be changed when worn but this is easy to access and doesn’t require the use of any tools.

Central Height Adjustment

Changing the cutting height couldn’t be easier with the ergonomic in-built lever beside the wheel. When using this lever, it’s possible to quickly and easily set the cutting height of the lawn mower in five separate positions between 20 and 70mm.

This means that your grass can be at the perfect height for the time of year and the adjustment also helps you from being able to cut safely on slopes without tearing up unsightly patches in your garden.

Service link

Unlike with Chinese lawn mowers, if you buy the 464 TR-B or any Mountfield products, a comprehensive after-sales support is provided. In the unlikely event of there being an issue with the lawnmower, there is a number you can ring for advice or it can be taken to be serviced at any authorised service centre in the UK (of which there are many).

These centre locations can be found at the service link website and this service is a huge benefit for those who worry about the longevity of their products and wish to keep them running for as long as possible.

464 TR-B vs 394 P-B

If you’re looking online then you may come across a cheaper, smaller option from Mountfield in the 394 P-B. This model shares the same engine as the 464 TR-B but we wouldn’t recommend it unless you have a truly tiny garden as its cutting width is reduced from 44cm to 39cm and it is hand propelled rather than self-propelled.

The grass box is also 40L rather than 55L which can make it difficult to use in extended usage.

What’s included in the box?

1 x Mountfield 464 TR-B Lawn Mower

1 x Grass Collector

1 x Instruction Manual

Conclusion

If you have acres to cut or just want to want to take your mowing to the next level then we recommend looking for a model which lets you mulch and has side discharge. Unfortunately, you’ll have to pay significantly more for these options and let’s be honest, not everyone wants or needs more than a machine that can quickly and reliably keep their garden tidy.

If that’s the case for you and you just want a self-propelled petrol lawn mower that is small, light and easy to manoeuvre, then the compact Mountfield 464 TR-B is a compelling option. Despite its positively svelte dimensions (when compared to similar models), it manages to pack in a 44cm cutting blade and a spacious 55L grass box, saving you many trips to the compost heap.

As for things you need to look out for with this mower, although we didn’t experience this problem ourselves, it should be noted that there have been a few complaints that the height adjustment slips for some people at lower levels.

We wouldn’t worry too much as this seems to be a rare problem, the majority of people in online reviews were extremely happy with their purchase but it may be something to look out for just in case. Overall the Mountfield 464 TR-B is a quintessential example of British engineering at its best, supplying sterling service reliably without complaint.

For medium-sized gardens this easy to assemble mower would be a great option, being simple to start and effective in use. What more can you possibly ask for?
