Top 3 Rear Roller Petrol Lawn Mowers
If you spend a lot of time in your garden, mowing your lawn, you might want to consider getting a petrol lawnmower. Similar to the world of automobiles, electricity seems to be the propulsion of the future. It is true that electric mowers are much better for the environment, however there is still a huge niche in the market for avid gardeners and lawn enthusiasts, which can only be filled by the classic petrol lawnmower.
The advantages of a petrol lawn mower are pretty substantial, They are not tied to a power supply so are ‘free to roam’ and can be used for lawns that are not immediately near a power supply. You do not have to run the risk of cutting through a power cable as you would with an electric mower. The convenience of this will be appreciated by those who spend half their time checking where the cable lies when using an electric mower. Petrol mowers tend to have more power than electric or hand driven mowers and so can make mowing the lawn an easier experience, so you can spend more time relaxing and enjoying your freshly cut lawn.
Although 4 wheel mowers give an excellent finish on all types of lawn you may be the owner of a fine lawn and want those classic stripes. If so you’ll need a mower with a rear roller mower. The full width rear rollers not only leave those fabulous stripes they provide you with additional control when you’re working around beds, paths or up to edges.
Lets take a look at some of the top picks for Rear Roller Petrol Lawn Mowers, and see which one could be the one for you.
Hyundai HYM460SPR 135CC Self Propelled Petrol Roller Lawn Mower Review – Our Number 1
This Hyundai (view on Amazon) self propelled lawn mower is a pretty impressive piece of kit. When it arrived, I took once look at it and i’m not ashamed to say, I fell in love. It reminded me of a cool racing car. And to be honest with you, the engine isn’t far off! With a 2.6kW Hyundai OHV 4-stroke 135cc engine, its amazingly powerful, starts really easily, and fuel consumption isn’t too high.
It features a full width ribbed rear roller which give you that luxury striped lawn finish, and lets be honest, isn’t that the most satisfying feeling when you look back at your hard work and see those gorgeous striped lines?
The rear wheel drive gives you a more reliable drive with less wheel slippage. The 46cm cutting width makes this ideal for bigger lawns. It also features single point, cutting height adjustment, with six cutting heights ranging from 25mm to 75mm so you can achieve the precision height you need.
The grass collection box is an impressive 60 litres, so you can really fill her up before you need to empty the bag, this means less time emptying, more time cutting!
- 135cc Hyundai engine – Powerful and will cut even the toughest patches of lawn, also reduced fuel consumption
- Full width ribbed rear roller – for a luxury striped lawn finish
- Rear wheel drive – for more handling power
- 46cm cutting width – ideal for medium sized lawns.
- Cutting height adjustment – six cutting heights 25mm to 75mm so you can have your lawn height as precise as you need.
- 60 litre grass collector – which is easy to remove and also super spacious so less time emptying
All round lean, mean, lawn mowing machine. Don’t have the funds for that sports car you want? How about a compromise on this neat little lawn mower, and at a fraction of the price! It made excellent work of my lawn, and was so user friendly that even my son was able to use it with ease. I highly recommend this snazzy lawn mower if you’re looking to spend a little more on a really nice piece of kit.

Mountfield Self Propelled Rear Roller Petrol Lawnmower Review – Number 2
The Mountfield S421R PD is a great self propelled rear roller mower, ideal for those classic lawn stripes. Powered by an easy start 100cc Mountfield RS 100 OHV 4-stroke engine and with forward drive coming from the powered rear roller, this mower is effortless to use and easily cuts right up to paths and border edges.
Weighing in at 31 kilograms, the robust, powder coated steel chassis ensures this quality lawn mower will deliver a superb finish for many years. As well as looking fantastic!
It has 5 cutting heights , ranging from 20mm to 70mm, selected using a single lever, ensuring you can pick the most suitable height for the finish required, so even the most particular of lawn lovers will be satisfied with their lawn length.
The 55 litre collector is easy to attach and empty when its full, and has a pretty huge capacity, meaning you will save time emptying the grass collector, meaning more time mowing, meaning more time to relax and enjoy your garden!
A 41cm cutting width means this is pretty great for medium sized lawns, although the manoeuvrability on this model wasn’t the best for me.
- 100cc Mountfield engine – effortless to use and powerful enough to cut through tough lawns
- Cutting width 41cm – great for medium sized lawns
- Steel Chassis – robust and hard wearing
- Self-propelled – so you simply have to steer this mower, so you won’t be breaking a sweat pushing this one around!
With a 5 year warrantee, Mountfield really put their trust in this product, which makes me feel pretty comfortable with its quality too. Overall it’s a decent lawnmower for the price, but I would say that compared to other products in a similar price range, I would be looking for a bit more bang for my buck. It had all the features I needed, but simply didn’t feel as good as some others I have used before. I can’t fault it in any particular area and I would buy this if it was a good deal, but full price I would say there are better options out there.

Webb Supreme RR17P Push Drive Petrol Rotary Rear Roller Lawnmower Review – Number 3
Webb was not a brand I was familiar with. I am a creature of habit and tend to stick with names that I know and trust, so when I tried out this Webb Supreme lawnmower, I must admit I was a little sceptical, but I found it at an excellent price and it seemed to fit in my needs pretty well. So I thought hey, what have I got to lose?
I was drawn to this particular model for the three different cutting options, collect, discharge or mulch. I have been mulching my lawn recently and its been looking vibrant and healthy, so the mulching feature is very important for me. However on my front lawn I like to collect so its great to be able to have the inter-changeable choice.
The difference with this mower to the other two is that it is push-drive making it a little heavier to handle but I don’t mind this at all, nothing wrong with breaking a sweat! This may be a slight problem on larger gardens or slopes.
The split rear roller really helps with manoeuvrability, so you can easily weave around edges and slightly irregular lawn shapes. It also features single lever height adjustment, so you can cut your lawn to the perfect height desired.
The 55 litre grass collection bag is pretty spacious and means you don’t need to constantly empty the bag, making your work a little easier.
- Six cutting heights – 23mm to 77mm for precision lawn length
- Briggs and Stratton 500e engine
- Split rear roller – for easy manouevrability
- Three cutting options – so you can collect, discharge or mulch whichever one suits you best and whenever you want to change
- Single lever height adjustment
With this model being a little cheaper than the other two I would say it is pretty good value for money. It served me really well with my lawn and was easy to assemble and start up. I feel it didn’t quite have the same wow factor as some of the others I tried, but it certainly did a good job. If you were looking to save a bit of money on a lawnmower but are still looking for something rear rollered and petrol powered then this could be a really great mower for you.
Features: Six cutting heights – Briggs and Stratton 500e engine – Split rear roller – three cutting options – single lever height adjustment
Price: Mid range
For me, when you’re spending a pretty penny on a new piece of kit, its all about the wow factor. You want something that’s going to make your friends go “oooh”. The Hyundai is the winner for me, it’s got the biggest engine, which means excellent cutting power, and it is self-propelled, so less work for me in the long run. I really love the shiny blue finish, which I know is superficial but I just can’t help myself.
The Hyundai gave me the most satisfaction after finishing the job, with the ribbed rear roller giving impressive results. I would highly recommend it to anyone that wants to add a little finesse to their lawn, easily and effortlessly!
