Best Ride-On Lawn Mowers UK 2026

Got a big lawn and tired of walking? A ride-on mower turns a two-hour chore into a 30-minute sit-down. We've compared the best models for UK gardens from John Deere, Mountfield and Stiga against specs and verified owner reviews.

Side-discharge, rear-collect or mulch?

Most ride-ons side-discharge as standard - the cuttings spray sideways onto the lawn. That's fine for large, open lawns but messy near paths and borders. A rear-collector attachment (often £200-£400 extra) tidies things up. Mulching decks chop clippings fine and drop them as fertiliser - the best option if you mow regularly.

Three ride-on mowers we recommend

1. John Deere X167 (£3,299)

The gold standard. John Deere's build quality is genuinely a class above - the X167 has a Kawasaki engine, hydrostatic transmission, 107 cm deck and a turning circle tight enough for most gardens. Parts availability is excellent even 15 years later. Read our John Deere X167 review Check price →.

2. Mountfield 1538M-SD (£2,499)

The best mid-range option. Mountfield's transmatic drive, 98 cm side-discharge deck and Mountfield-branded engine handle lawns up to 4,000 m². Not as refined as the Deere, but £800 cheaper and widely available at UK garden centres. Read our Mountfield 1538M review Check price →.

3. Stiga Estate 384M (£1,999)

The entry-level pick. Stiga's 84 cm deck is smaller than the others but perfectly adequate for lawns around 1,500-2,500 m². The price includes a rear collector, which is unusual at this end of the market. Read our Stiga review Check price →.

Ride-on vs zero-turn

Zero-turn mowers steer by varying wheel speed rather than a steering wheel - they're faster and more manoeuvrable. But they're also more expensive (£3,000+ entry), harder to use on slopes, and overkill for most UK gardens. Stick with a standard ride-on unless you're mowing over 5,000 m².

Frequently asked questions

What size garden do you need for a ride-on mower?+
As a minimum, 1,000 m². Below that, a ride-on is overkill and hard to manoeuvre. Most ride-on owners have lawns between 1,500 m² and 5,000 m². If your garden is under 1,000 m², a self-propelled petrol or large cordless mower is more practical.
How much does a ride-on mower cost to run?+
Budget roughly £100-£200 per year for fuel, oil, blade sharpening and an annual service. Belts and batteries need replacing every 3-5 years. Total running cost is significantly higher than a push mower but lower per-square-metre than paying a gardener.
