What owners praise
- The price - £2,499 for a functioning, reliable ride-on from an established brand. The cheapest new ride-on worth recommending without caveats.
- Engine reliability - owners report it starting every time, years in. The 452 cc single-cylinder isn't exciting but it's proven in thousands of UK gardens.
- Simple mechanics - transmatic transmission has fewer failure points than hydrostatic. If something does go wrong, any local garden machinery dealer can fix it cheaply.
- 98 cm deck - covers ground quickly. A 1,500 m² lawn takes roughly 20-25 minutes.
The drawbacks
- Manual transmission - you select a gear, you drive at that speed. No infinite variability like hydrostatic. Changing speed requires stopping. Fine on open lawns; annoying around obstacles.
- Side-discharge only - without the optional collector (£300 extra), clippings spray sideways. Looks untidy until they settle.
- Less refined than Deere/Stiga - seat comfort, steering feel, vibration levels are all noticeably below the Deere X167. You feel the price difference.
- Turning circle is wider - 56 cm vs 46 cm on the Deere. Noticeable when navigating around trees and borders.
How it compares
The John Deere X167 at £3,299 is £800 more but significantly more refined - Kawasaki V-twin, hydrostatic drive, tighter turning. The Stiga Estate 384M at £2,899 sits in between - better engine and transmission than the Mountfield at £400 more. For pure budget with adequate results, the Mountfield wins.
Who should buy it
UK homeowners with lawns over 1,500 m² who need a ride-on at the lowest responsible price. Budget-conscious buyers who value reliability and simplicity over refinement. Anyone stepping up from a self-propelled petrol mower who doesn't want to spend £3,000+.
Don't buy it if you have a complex garden with many obstacles (manual transmission is frustrating), if you want collection included (it's extra), or if your budget can stretch to the Deere X167 (noticeably better in every way).
