Lawn Mower Maintenance Guide
A well-maintained mower cuts better, lasts longer and costs less to run. Here's what to do and when - for both cordless and petrol.
After every mow
- Brush loose grass off the top of the deck and around the blade housing
- Empty the grass box completely - damp clippings left overnight go mouldy
- Wipe the blade area if you can see clumps building up
Monthly (during mowing season)
- Tip the mower and scrape dried grass off the underside of the deck with a paint scraper
- Check the blade for nicks and chips - a damaged blade tears grass instead of cutting it
- On petrol mowers: check the oil level
- On cordless: inspect the battery contacts for corrosion or debris
Annual service (March, before the season starts)
Cordless mowers
- Sharpen or replace the blade
- Clean the deck thoroughly
- Charge the battery to 50-80% if stored over winter
- Check wheels and height adjustment for wear
Petrol mowers
- Change the engine oil (SAE 30 for most Honda/Briggs engines)
- Replace the spark plug (typically NGK or Champion, £3-£5)
- Clean or replace the air filter
- Sharpen or replace the blade
- Drain old fuel or add stabiliser
- Check the pull cord for fraying
Winter storage
Clean the mower thoroughly, sharpen the blade, and store it somewhere dry. For petrol mowers, either drain the fuel completely or add fuel stabiliser. For cordless, store the battery at 40-60% charge in a frost-free location - never leave it fully discharged over winter, as this can permanently damage lithium-ion cells.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I service my lawn mower?+
Cordless: sharpen the blade once a year and clean the deck after every 3-4 mows. Petrol: full service (oil, spark plug, air filter, blade) once a year - ideally at the start of the mowing season in March.
Can I jet wash my lawn mower?+
Avoid it. Pressure washers force water into bearings, electrics and the engine. Use a stiff brush and a garden hose on a gentle setting instead. Tip the mower on its side (air filter up on petrol models) and scrape dried grass off the deck with a paint scraper.
