Cheap Ride-On Mowers Under £2,000
You don't need to spend £3,000+ to sit down while you mow. There are genuine options under £2,000 - you just need to know where the compromises are.
What you sacrifice under £2,000
At this price, expect a transmatic (manual gear) transmission rather than smooth hydrostatic, a smaller deck (76-84 cm vs 98-107 cm on premium models), and a less powerful engine. Build quality is adequate but not tank-grade - plastics where premium mowers use steel, and paint that chips easier. None of that stops it mowing, though.
Three budget ride-on mowers worth considering
1. Stiga Estate 384M (£1,999)
Right at the budget ceiling but the best value ride-on in the UK. 84 cm deck, rear collector included, and a Stiga engine that's proven reliable. Handles lawns up to 2,500 m². Read our Stiga review Check price →.
2. McCulloch M115-77T (£1,499)
McCulloch (owned by Husqvarna) offers a 77 cm side-discharge deck, Briggs & Stratton engine and transmatic drive for well under £2,000. No frills, but it mows large flat lawns reliably. Read our McCulloch review Check price →.
3. Mountfield 1330M (£1,699)
Mountfield's entry-level ride-on has an 84 cm deck, rear collection and a Mountfield-branded engine. Available at most UK garden centres with easy access to parts and servicing. A safe, boring, reliable choice - which is exactly what you want from a budget ride-on.
Second-hand is worth considering
A 3-5 year old John Deere or Husqvarna in good condition will outperform a brand-new budget ride-on for the same money. Check the engine hours (under 300 is good), inspect the deck for rust, and make sure the blades are straight. Dealers often sell refurbished units with a 12-month warranty.
