Best Cordless Mowers for Large Gardens (500 m²+)
Big garden, no petrol? It's genuinely possible now. On manufacturer figures and owner reviews, the latest 56 V cordless mowers match petrol on power and runtime, with several rated for 600+ m² lawns on a single charge.
What makes a cordless mower large-garden capable?
Three things: voltage (36 V minimum, 56 V ideal), deck width (41 cm or wider), and self-propelled drive. Without all three, you'll either run out of battery, take forever, or exhaust yourself pushing. A twin-battery setup extends range further but adds weight and cost.
Three cordless mowers built for big lawns
1. EGO LM2122E-SP (£599)
The benchmark. EGO's 56 V motor delivers petrol-equivalent torque, the self-propelled drive handles slopes effortlessly, and the 52 cm deck covers ground fast. EGO rates the 7.5 Ah battery for up to around 700 m² per charge, and owner reviews back that up. Nothing else cordless comes close at this size. Read our full EGO review Check price →.
2. Makita DLM462 Twin 18 V (£499 bare)
Runs two 18 V LXT batteries in series for 36 V power. The 46 cm steel deck is tank-solid, and if you're already in the Makita ecosystem the bare-tool price is reasonable. Runtime depends on your battery size - two 6 Ah packs give roughly 500 m².
3. Cobra MX46S40V (£379)
The value pick. Cobra's 40 V self-propelled mower has a 46 cm deck, mulching capability, and comes with two batteries in the box. Build quality isn't EGO or Makita level, but for under £400 with batteries included, it's hard to beat. Read our Cobra review Check price →.
When to stick with petrol
If your lawn is over 1,000 m², slopes heavily, or you're mowing rough meadow grass, petrol still wins on sheer runtime and power. The crossover point where cordless genuinely matches petrol is around 800 m² for most users.
