Where to Trade In Old Lawn Mowers
Got an old mower taking up space in the shed? Here's how to get rid of it - and possibly get money or a discount off a new one.
Dealer trade-ins
Independent garden machinery dealers (the ones that sell Stihl, Husqvarna, Hayter, Honda) are your best bet for a trade-in deal. Many run spring promotions where they'll take your old mower and knock £50-£150 off a new one. The mower doesn't even need to work - they refurbish and resell the good ones and scrap the rest.
Find your nearest dealer at stihl.co.uk/dealer-locator or honda.co.uk/lawn-and-garden/dealer-locator.
Sell it yourself
- Facebook Marketplace - the fastest way to sell a working mower locally. Price it at 30-50% of new and expect offers.
- Gumtree - still popular for garden equipment, especially outside London.
- eBay (collection only) - better for premium brands (Honda, Hayter) where buyers search by model number.
A clean, working mower with a sharp blade photographs better and sells faster. Spend 30 minutes cleaning it before listing.
Free options
- Freecycle / Freegle - give it away to someone who needs it. Working or not, someone will usually collect.
- Community tool libraries - some UK areas have tool-sharing schemes that accept donated mowers.
Recycling and scrap
Your local council recycling centre (HWRC/tip) will take mowers for free. Petrol mowers go in scrap metal; cordless/electric go in the WEEE (electrical waste) section. Drain fuel and oil first. Batteries should be removed and placed in the battery recycling bin.
Scrap metal dealers will collect large ride-on mowers for free - they're worth enough in metal value to make the trip worthwhile.
